Background: USP3

Ubiquitin (Ub) is a highly conserved protein found ubiquitously in eukaryotic organisms. The conjugation of ubiquitin to proteins is an important means to regulate protein activity for many cellular processes by tagging them for degradation. Removal of Ub can rescue proteins from degradation. This is accomplished by the ubiquitin-specific processing protease (UBP) family of enzymes. Ubiquitin specific processing protease 3 (USP3) is a member of this family and is involved in the deubiquitination of histones H2A and H2B. Alternate names for USP3 include ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase 3, ubiquitin thioesterase 3, ubiquitin-specific-processing protease 3, and deubiquitinating enzyme 3.

Long Name

Ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase 3

Alternate Names

Deubiquitinating enzyme 3, EC 3.1.2.15, EC 3.4.19.12, MGC129878, MGC129879, SIH003, ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase 3, ubiquitin specific peptidase 3, ubiquitin specific protease 3, ubiquitin thioesterase 3, Ubiquitin thiolesterase 3, Ubiquitin-specific-processing protease 3, UBP
