The Mre11 protein exhibits both exo- and endonuclease activities and is a component of the Mre11/Rad50/Nbs1 (MRN) complex. The MRN complex binds chromatin in regions of DNA double-strand breaks (DSB) during the normal cell cycle and in response to genotoxic stress, and is involved in control of DSB repair during homologous recombination.
