Calpains are a family of cytosolic calcium-activated cysteine proteases involved in a variety of cellular processesincluding apoptosis, cell division, modulation of integrin-cytoskeletal interactions, and synaptic plasticity (Dear etal., 2000 (PubMed 10964513)).
