Background: EMAP-II

AIMP1, short for Aminoacyl tRNAse synthetase complex iVinteracting multifunctional protein 1, is also called p43 (~43 kDa molecular weight). Along with AIMP2 and AIMP3, AIMP1 is one of the three auxiliary proteins which bind to the aminoacyl tRNase synthetase complex. The AIMPs together with the Aminoacyl tRNAse synthetase, ARS, complex perform a critical role in protein synthesis but also in biological processes such as apoptosis, angiogenesis and inflammation (1, 2). AIMP1 is characterized as a pleiotropic cytokine that enhances TLR1, TLR2, TLR3 and TLR7 expression in BM-DCs. AIMP1 also enhances DC production of IL-6 and IL-12 and increases NF-fUB activity (3, 4). AIMP1 has demonstrated to immune-stimulating activities as well as anti-tumor activities in mouse xenograft models (5). Expression AIMP1 and AIMP2 and 3 proteins are diminished in certain cancers (6). Overall, AIMPs may act as tumor suppressors and perhaps may be considered as a focused target for cancer treatment candidates.
