Background: GPR39

G protein-coupled receptor 39 is an important receptor in the Ghrelin family pathway, and plays an important role in hypertension and adipogenesis. When obestatin binds GPR39, vasodilation occurs in the heart and pancreas, as an effect of pituitary growth hormone effects there. This reaction seems to be protective in these tissues and decreases the effects of diabetes and hypercholesterolemia. However, overexpression of GPR39 is implicated in the formation of squamous cell carcinoma in the esophagus. In this cancer, metastases have inordinately high levels of GPR39.
