Background: HIP1

One of the four subunits of the histone regulatory complex A, HIP1 is an anti-apoptosis protein in the brain. HIP1 (Huntingtin-interacting protein 1) protects normal neurological tissue from erroneous inflammatory and apoptotic events by linking the actin cytoskeleton and clathrin-mediated endocytosis machinery. It is important in the generation of clathrin coated vesicles in the neuron. However, if deletion of HIP1 occurs, neurological disease is initiated and is correlated to epilepsy, learning disabilities, spinal and testicular defects, hematopoietic issues, and other neurobehavioral abnormalities such as Huntington's disease. HIP1 also interacts with the Hedgehog signaling pathway, and is important in regulating the abundance and scope of Hedgehog signaling.
