Background: HP1 alpha

CBX5 (chromobox protein homolog 5), also known as HP1 (heterochromatin protein 1 homolog alpha), is one of 3 isoforms of HP1 that binds heterochromatin and functions as a structural adaptor to stabilize and organize macromolecular complexes with nucleosomes for higher chromatin structure. All of the HP1 isoforms possess a chromodomain and chromoshadow domain and associate with methylated histones that mediate transcriptional repression. Alternate names for CBX5 include HP1 alpha, antigen p25, HP1Hs-alpha, and HP1A.

Alternate Names

Antigen p25, chromobox homolog 5, chromobox homolog 5 (Drosophila HP1 alpha), chromobox homolog 5 (HP1 alpha homolog, Drosophila), chromobox protein homolog 5, Heterochromatin protein 1 homolog alpha, heterochromatin protein 1-alpha, HP1, HP1 alpha, HP1 alpha homolog, HP1A, HP1-ALPHA, HP1Hs alpha, HP1Hs-alpha
