Background: Galectin-9

Mouse Galectin-9 ( beta-galactoside-binding lectin 9) is a 36-39 kDa, secreted, S-type lectin. It is 353 amino acids in length and contains no identifiable signal sequence. There are two distinct carbohydrate-binding regions (aa 81-87 and 285-291) that are joined by a linker region (aa 148-205). At least one alternate splice form exists that shows a 31 aa insertion between aa 147-148. The short form is expressed on fibroblasts, hepatocytes, endothelial cells and astrocytes. The long form is expressed on intestinal epithelium. Galectin-9 binds TIM-3 on Th1 cells, inducing apoptosis. Mouse Galectin-9 is 69% and 85% aa identical to human and rat Galectin-9, respectively.
