Background: mtTFA

Mitochondrial transcription factor A (mtTFA) is one of the most important transcription factors related to mitochondrial genes. In turn, mtTFA regulates several pathways for metabolism and energy storage in cells. In several metabolic diseases, including insulin-resistance related diabetes, the activity of mtTFA is directly linked to interactions with oxidative stress and fat cell differentiation. In cancers, mtTFA is important in supporting the energy requirements of the fast-growing cells. When dysfunctions in mitochondrial activity occur, mtTFA and its relationship to other proteins is often to blame; mtTFA is known to interact with TNF-alpha, PPAR, UCP4, POLRMT and others. Increased expression of mtTFA might be a good biomarker for Arsenic-induced Bowen's disease.
