Background: RIG-I

RIG-I belongs to the Helicase family and contains two CARD domains, one helicase ATP-binding domain and one helicase C-terminal domain. It is involved in innate immune defense against viruses. It triggers a transduction cascade involving MAVS/IPS1 which leads to activation of NF-kappa-B, IRF3 and IRF7 inducing expression of antiviral cytokines such as INF-beta and RANTES (CCL5) during viral replication. Reports also says that TLR3 and RIG-like receptor on myeloid dendritic cells and Rig-like receptor on human Nk cells are both required for production of IFN-gamma in response to double-stranded RNA during viral infection.
