Background: XBP1

X-box binding protein 1 (XBP1) is a transcription factor important in endoplasmic reticulum function and stress response. In inflammatory bowel disease, the malfunction of XBP1 is one of many contributing factors that affects the unfolded protein response and inflammation. In response to heat shock, XBP1 is erroneously spliced and several downstream proteins are resultantly mis-folded. While the effects of XBP1 issues are mainly evidenced in mucosal tissues as a response to mechanical or disease induced stress, it is also important in some brain development and cognitive ability formation.
