Background: Neuregulin-1 beta 1/NRG1 beta 1

Neuregulin-1 (NRG1) is one of four Neuregulin proteins that contain an EGF-like domain that mediates their interaction with ErbB3 or ErbB4 to trigger intracellular signaling. Multiple transmembrane or soluble forms of NRG1 can be generated through alternative splicing, the use of alternative promoters, or proteolytic shedding. NRG1 isoforms play important roles during development of both the nervous system and the heart. They regulate neurotransmitter receptors expression in neurons and at the neuromuscular junction, and promote the differentiation and development of Schwann cells from neural crest stem cells.
