Progranulin/PGRN: Proteins and Enzymes

Progranulin, also known as Acrogranin, PCDGF, and Epithelin/Granulin Precursor, is a widely expressed glycoprotein that can undergo proteolysis to generate numerous Granulin peptides. Progranulin plays a role in the regulation of mesothelial differentiation, macrophage development, sexual differentiation of the brain, cartilage proliferation, wound repair, and the development of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. It is often upregulated in cancer and contributes to tumor progression.

Progranulin upregulation or mutation is associated with several neurological disorders including frontotemporal dementia, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Alzheimer's disease, and motor neuron disease.
