Versican: Proteins and Enzymes
Versican is a member of the lectican protein family that also includes Aggrecan, Brevican, and Neurocan. Versican is a large extracellular matrix proteoglycan that is present in a variety of tissues. It plays important structural roles, forming loose, hydrated matrices during development and disease. It also interacts directly or indirectly with cells to regulate such physiological processes as cell adhesion, survival, proliferation, and motility.
