Background: Integrin alpha 4/CD49d

The Integrin  alpha4 subunit, also known as CD49d and VLA-4 alpha subunit, forms heterodimers with Integrin beta1 (CD29) or beta7. Integrins alpha4 beta1 (VLA4) and alpha4 beta7 are both receptors for fibronectin and VCAM. Integrin alpha4 beta7 also binds the mucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule (MAdCAM-1). On the cell surface, VLA4 will participate in homotypic binding between endothelial cells and leukocytes. The extracellular domains of human and mouse Integrin alpha4 share 85% aa sequence identity.
