Background: Serpin I1

Serpin I1, also known as neuroserpin, is a secreted serine protease inhibitor predominantly expressed in the brain. Serpin I1 defects cause familial encephalopathy with neuroserpin inclusion bodies (FEN1B), an autosomal dominant dementia. The amino acid sequence of human Serpin I1 is 99%, 93%, 88%, 86% and 80% identical to that of chimpanzee, dog, rat, mouse and chicken.
