Background: IgG

IgG is a glycoprotein that is produced by plasma cells in response to an immunogen. It is the only class of immunoglobulins that can cross the placenta, which is mediated by a receptor on placental cells in the Fc region. It is the most versatile immunoglobulin because it is capable of carrying out all of the functions of immunoglobulin molecules. IgG fixes complement and binds to the Fc receptors on leukocytes, monocytes and macrophages; this causes the cell to internalize the antigen.
