Exosome component 6: Proteins and Enzymes
The EXOSC6 gene encodes a 272 amino acid long, 28 kDA exosome complex component MTR3 protein that, even though its exact function is not known, is believed to function in the regulation of mRNA degradation. EXOSC6 requires ARE-binding proteins that recruit it to unstable mRNAs, in effect encouraging their rapid degradation. EXOSC6 has been linked to alcoholism, liver disease, hepatitis, and alcoholic hepatitis. EXOSC6 functions in ATP/ITP metabolism, deadenylation-dependent mRNA decay, destabilization of mRNA by KSRP and by BRF1, as well as regulation of mRNA stability by proteins known to bind AU-rich elements. EXOSC6 will interact with genes UPF2, SRSF3, EXOSC2, EXOSC7, and EIF3I.
