Product Specifications

Immunogen

Human beta Endorphin (full length native protein).

Specificity

The antibody B31.15 reacts with human beta Endorphin, an endogenous opiate derived from ACTH gene. ACTH (Corticotropin; human 39 aa) is synthesized by the anterior pituitary gland and stimulates the adrenal cortex; 6 hormones are derived from one ACTH gene: ACTH, lipotropin, alpha-MSH, beta-MSH, endorphin, and one other.

Background: Beta-endorphin

Beta-endorphin is an endogenous opioid peptide neurotransmitter found in the neurons of both the central and peripheral nervous system. Beta-endorphin is a peptide, 31 amino acids long, resulting from processing of the precursor pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC). beta-endorphin is found in neurons of the hypothalamus as well as the pituitary gland. It is an agonist of the opioid receptors, with evidence suggesting that it serves as the endogenous ligand of the u-opioid receptor, the same receptor to which the chemicals extracted from opium, such as morphine and codeine, have their analgesic and addictive effects
