Background: DC-SIGN/CD209

DC-SIGN, also called CD209, is a C type lectin receptor and an acronym for Dendritic Cell-Specific intracellular adhesion molecule 3 (ICAM-3) grabbing nonintegrin protein. DC-SIGN (CD209) is a 45kDa receptor which binds mannans and glycans on bacteria, viruses and fungi (1). Expressed on Dendritic Cells (DCs) and DC-like macrophages, DC-SIGN is an important cell interaction molecule mediating DC-T cell or DC-Neutrophil responses. DC-SIGN is especially important in DC Th1 interaction, regulating Th1 activity through it's role as a pathogen receptor (2-4). Interaction between DC-SIGN and TLR4 has been demonstrated for induction of inflammatory responses (5). As a CLR and innate immune receptor, DC-SIGN detection and quantitation with antibody probes are used as both a phenotype and indicator of a functional role in anti-microbial responses of DC's.
