Background: Glycogen Synthase

Glycogen is a high molecular mass polysaccharide that serves as a repository of glucose for use in times of metabolic need. Glycogen synthase (EC 2.4.1.11) catalyzes the addition of glucose monomers to the growing glycogen molecule through the formation of alpha-1,4-glycoside linkages (Pederson et al., 2004 [PubMed 15282316]).[supplied by OMIM]

Alternate Names

EC 2.4.1.11, glycogen [starch] synthase, muscle, glycogen synthase 1 (muscle), GYSGSY
