Background: IL-22

Interleukin-22 (IL-22 or IL-TIF (IL-10-related T-cell derived inducible factor)) belongs to the IL-10 family of regulatory cytokines which also includes IL-10, IL-19, IL-20, IL-24 and IL-26. IL-22 is produced by T lymphocytes following anti-CD3 stimulation. It inhibits IL-4 production of Th2 cells, activates STAT-1 and STAT-3 in several hepatoma cell lines and upregulates the production of acute phase proteins. It may also be involved in inflammatory responses. Human and mouse IL-22 share 79% amino acid identity. Recombinant human IL-22 is a non-disulfide linked homodimer, signaling through a receptor complex of two subunits, IL-22R and IL-10R-beta, belonging to the class II cytokine receptor family.
