Background: LAR

Leukocyte common antigen-related (LAR) family receptor protein tyrosine phosphatases (LAR-RPTP) bind to liprin-alpha (SYD2) and are implicated in axon guidance. LAR is also involved in the regulation of epithelial cell-cell contacts and in the control of beta-catenin signaling. Increased LAR expression is found in the insulin-responsive tissue of obese insulin-resistant individuals and may contribute to the pathogenesis of insulin resistance. LAR is a receptor-type PTP and possesses an extracellular region, a single transmembrane region, and two tandem intracytoplasmic catalytic domains. The extracellular region contains three Ig-like domains, and nine domains similar to that of neural-cell adhesion molecule. Several isoforms of LAR have been reported. Possible cell adhesion receptor. It possesses an intrinsic protein tyrosine phosphatase activity (PTPase).. The first PTPase domain has enzymatic activity. while the second one seems to affect the substrate specificity of the first one.
