Background: Melanocortin-3 R/MC3R

Mouse Melanocortin 3R (MC3R) is a member of the melanocortin receptor family. The 323 amino acid G-protein-coupled 7-transmembrane glycoprotein is expressed in the brain where, along with MC4R, it binds alpha, beta and gamma melanocyte stimulating hormones and is involved in regulating energy balance. MC3R is also expressed by macrophages and plays an anti-inflammatory role in the heart and other tissues. Of the 69 aa that are extracellular, mouse MC3R shares 91% and 78% sequence identity with rat and human MC3R, respectively.
