Product Summary for SP-D Antibody (1.7) [Biotin]

Immunogen

Purified porcine surfactant protein D

Reactivity Notes

Mouse reactivity reported in scientific literature (PMID: 26092997).

Specificity

This antibody detects porcine surfactant protein D (pSP-D), a 138kD member of the collectin family of proteins. Surfactant protein D is thought to play a significant role in the innate immune response against microorganisms within the lungs and at other mucosal surfaces. SP-D is a multifunctional protein which binds selectively to saccharides and lipids on microbial surfaces promoting antimicrobial responses and regulating surfactant lipid homeostasis. SP-D expression is induced in lung surfactant in response to aerogenous bacterial infection, and upon binding to bacteria, promotes phagocytosis and antigen presentation by dendritic cells. Recent studies suggest that pSP-D could serve as a serum biomarker specific for bronchopneumonia in pigs.

Background: SP-D

Surfactant protein D (SP-D) is synthesized and secreted by lung epithelial cells. It belongs to group III of the family of C-type lectins and members of this group has overall structure consisting of multiple globular head regions linked by triple-helical, collagen-like, strands. This group also includes SP-A and the serum proteins mannan-binding protein, conglutinin and collectin-43, all of which have been shown to bind to the C1q receptor found on a wide variety of cells. Both SP-D and SP-A have been shown to enhance oxygen radical production by alveolar macrophages. The serum concentration is 88 ng/ml in healthy individuals (2).
