Background: Synaptophysin

Synaptophysin is a 38 kDa synaptic vesicle associated protein. The pathology of synaptic components is investigated by measuring the expression of synaptophysin that is mainly concentrated in synaptic terminals. The expression of synaptophysin is a measure of dynamic plastic changes in nerve tissue. A decrease in synaptophysin and other synaptic vesicle associated proteins (Synaptotagmin, synaptosomal associated protein 25 kDa, SNAP-25, CLC ad GAP-43) generally means degeneration in the nerve fibers and an increased expression results in enhanced neuroplasticity and neuronal hypertrophy. In conditions involving generative changes in the nerve tissue, the expression of psynaptophysin is generally reduced, for example, in Schizophrenia an Alzhiemers disease. A decreased expression of synaptophysin in hippocampus of Schizoprenic patients has also been reported.
