Background: BPHL

BPHL is a Serine hydrolase which Belongs to the AB hydrolase superfamily. This family catalyzes the hydrolytic activation of amino acid ester prodrugs of nucleoside analogs such as valacyclovir and valganciclovir. This protein is expressed at high levels in liver and kidney and at lower levels in heart, intestine and skeletal muscle. It plays a role in detoxification processes. BPHL is a specific alpha-amino acid ester hydrolase that prefers small, hydrophobic, and aromatic side chains and does not have a stringent requirement for the leaving group other than preferring a primary alcohol. Recombinant human BPHL protein, fused to His-tag at N-terminus, was expressed in E.coli and purified by using conventional chromatography techniques.
