IFN-omega: Proteins and Enzymes
Interferon-omega (IFN-omega), a type I interferon, is a monomeric glycoprotein distantly related in structure to IFN-alpha and IFN-beta, but unrelated to IFN-gamma. The human type I interferon receptor complex, which mediates the biological activity of IFN-alpha and IFN-beta, also binds IFN-omega. The complex is composed of a 100 kDa ligand-binding subunit (IFN-alpha R1) and a 125 kDa subunit (IFN-alpha R2) that is involved both in ligand binding and signal transduction. IFN-omega is secreted by virus-infected leukocytes.
