Background: Neurokinin B

Neurokinin B (NKB) belongs to tachykinin family of peptides that also includes substance P, NKA, neuropeptide K, neuropeptide-gamma, and hemokinin-1, and NKB is the only tachykinin synthesized from preprotachykinin-B gene (designated as TAC3 in mammals, except for rodents where it is named Tac2). Tachykinins are characterized by a common carboxyl-terminal amino acid sequence of FXGLM-NH2 , X being a hydrophobic residue and are active peptides which stimulates neurons, evoke behavioral responses, are potent vasodilators and secretagogues (secretion stimulators), and contract directly or indirectly smooth muscles. NKB is the cleaved product of neurokinin B-like protein Zneurok1 (also called preprotachykinin-B or tachykinin-3) and act as an endogenous agonist ligand for its receptor, the NK3 receptor (NKB receptor). NKB signaling has been reported to play critical role in pre-eclampsia which is a potentially life threatening disease and is essential to neuroprotection in neurodegenerative diseases as well as to normal reproductive development.
