Background: Panendothelial Cell Antigen

MECA-32 is a single-pass type II membrane homodimer glycoprotein (50-55 kDa) primarily expressed on most endothelial cells in embryonic and adult mouse tissues, except in the brain, skeletal, and cardiac muscle, where expression is more constrained. In the brain, it is only expressed in the circumventricular organs and the neurohemal tissues. In skeletal and cardiac muscle, MECA-32 is confined in small arterioles and venules. In cases such as cardiac transplantation or inflammation, MECA-32 expression can be induced on some negative-cardiac endothelial cells. During embryonic development, MECA-32 antigen is expressed on the brain vasculature up to the first 16 days of gestation and disappears thereafter. The cessation of MECA-32 antigen expression in the CNS may be associated with the establishment of the blood-brain barrier, which begins on day 16 of gestation. In the adult mouse, inflammation in the CNS can lead to re-expression of the panendothelial cell antigen.
