Background Information
Pharmacodynamics and Pharmacokinetics
Pharmacology is split into two main areas, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics. Pharmacodynamics is the study of drugs and their interactions on biological systems. It encompasses drug design and characterization of drugs (e.g. small molecules or peptides). Pharmacokinetics interrogates the effects of biological systems on drug action, studying how a drug is metabolized, absorbed and trafficked into and around the body, as well as the mechanism for drug clearance.
The word drug, as used on this website, is intended to mean small molecules or peptides that affect biological function. If drugs have medical applications, they are termed pharmaceuticals.
Pharmacology Product Ranges
Bio-Techne has a long legacy in supporting pharmacology research with high quality small molecules and peptides. Tocris, a Bio-Techne brand, started out as a pharmacology company in 1982, when Professor Jeff Watkins from the University of Bristol, UK, made glutamate compounds commercially available to the wider scientific community. The first compounds manufactured and sold were DL-AP4 (Catalog # 0101), a broad spectrum excitatory amino acid (EAA) ligand, and D-AP4 (Catalog # 0102) and L-AP4 (Catalog # 0103), DL-AP4’s two isomers.
Bio-Techne provides pharmacological research tools for all main research areas including cancer, cardiovascular systems, cell and gene therapy, endocrinology, immunology, neuroscience, pain and inflammation infectious diseases and respiratory systems. Our catalog includes a comprehensive range of gold standard reagents and cutting edge tools such as photoswitchable ligands, DREADD ligands, PSEMs, fluorescent probes, and PROTAC® Degraders. We pride ourselves on being first to market with the latest technologies and tools. Our world class team of PhD qualified scientists, collaborate with industry and academia to ensure we are able to make the latest tools commercially available to scientists in a timely manner.
Pharmacology Resources and Literature
We produce and provide a large range of free scientific posters, product guides, product listings and scientific reviews to request or download at tocris.com. These pieces are authored by experts in their field. Two exceptional posters that highlight some of the most recent advances in pharmacological theory are the Allosteric GPCR Pharmacology poster and GPCR Efficacy and Biased Agonism poster, authored by Professor Arthur Christopoulos, Professor Patrick Sexton, David Thal and Denise Wootten. These pieces discuss the latest GPCR signaling pharmacology and highlights therapeutic applications of ligands with different efficacies as well as biased agonism, PAMS and NAMs.
We also have a range of in-house authored scientific meeting posters and scientific bulletins including the popular Chemogenetics bulletin, which gives a clear and concise introduction into chemogenetic methods to manipulate neuronal activity.
Finally we have a selection of informative blogs covering a range of research areas including developing chemical probes for epigenetic targets and targeting the immune system in cancer with small molecules. Check out the full range of titles.
