Background: Integrin alpha 8

Integrin alpha8 is a 170-200 kDa member of the Integrin family of adhesion molecules. It forms an exclusive noncovalent heterodimer with Integrin beta1. Integrin alpha8/ beta1 promotes both cell adhesion and survival, and is known to bind to fibronectin, LAP-TGF beta1 and Nephronectin. It is principally expressed in smooth muscle cells.  Human alpha8 is a 1025 amino acid (aa) type I transmembrane glycoprotein. It contains a 974 aa extracellular domain (ECD) (aa 39-1012) and a 30 aa cytoplasmic domain. In the ECD, human alpha8 shares 90% aa sequence identity with mouse alpha8 protein.
